CRESH Alcohol and Tobacco Density Map of Scotland

The motion

That the Parliament commends the collaborative work between Dr Niamh Shortt from the University of Edinburgh, her co-authors, Professor Jamie Pearce from the University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences and Professor Richard Mitchell of the University of Glasgow, Alcohol Focus Scotland and Action on Smoking and Health Scotland, in mapping the density across Scotland of outlets for alcohol and tobacco against the data on death rates linked to lung cancer, lung disease and alcohol use, and demonstrating how these are linked; applauds the fact that the map is free to access on the website of the Centre for Research on Environment, Society and Health (CRESH), an organisation that aims to contribute to a healthier population and environment; understands that the map will be a valuable tool for local authorities when granting licences and deciding whether there is an overprovision of alcohol and tobacco outlets; considers that the map also provides the opportunity to empower communities by offering them better evidence of the local picture, as this information has not previously been readily available to local residents, and hopes that this work will help contribute to reducing the rate of alcohol abuse and smoking, which are preventable causes of ill-health and premature death.
