Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week
The motion
That the Parliament warmly welcomes Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week, from 1 to 7 December 2015; acknowledges that the theme of the week will be seven days of living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which aims to convey the daily struggle of living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, more commonly known as IBD; recognises what it considers the crucial need to increase awareness and understanding of what it is like to live with IBD and how these devastating conditions affect a person’s daily life; understands that every 30 minutes a person is diagnosed with IBD, with up to 26,000 people in Scotland living with the condition, a higher incidence rate than anywhere else in the UK; notes that this equates to one in 210 of the population living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, which are debilitating, long-term and fluctuating conditions for which there is no cure, with lifetime medical costs comparable to other major diseases such as diabetes and cancer and estimated at £72 million per annum across Scotland, and calls on all MSPs, in conjunction with Crohn’s and Colitis UK, to help raise awareness of these hidden and often misunderstood conditions.
