Gender Pay Gap in Scottish Councils Continues
The motion
That the Parliament notes with concern reports that women employed by Scottish councils are paid on average 15% less than their male counterparts; understands that this difference equates to £3,848 annually and that, while women make up 48% of the workforce, they account for 76% of all part-time workers in Scotland; is concerned that the annual gender pay gap in Glasgow City Council is 3.9% and 3.5% in Edinburgh City Council; considers it unacceptable that, more than four decades after the Equal Pay Act 1970 was introduced, the divide remains in all sectors and women are still in predominantly part-time, poorly paid and low status work, and believes that more must be done to tackle the wage gap between men and women in Scotland.
