First Living Wage Accredited Nightclub in the UK

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Glasgow venue, Firewater, on becoming what it understands is the first nightclub in the UK to become an accredited living wage employer; understands that the business will pay the Scottish living wage of £8.25 an hour and that the venue’s management believes that this pay rise, for more than 80% of the club’s staff, will decrease staff turnover and deliver an even higher level of service for customers; considers this a welcome milestone for the Poverty Alliance and the Scottish Living Wage Campaign; notes the work of the Better than Zero Campaign, which has been highlighting the insecure and low pay culture that exists in much of the hospitality sector; commends this campaign, which is run by young people for young people who are in non-unionised workplaces and on low pay, zero-hours or short-hours contracts or experiencing poor working conditions; believes that these conditions are also often prevalent in catering industries such as fast food, hotels, pubs and club chains as well as other areas, including retail and social care, and continues to encourage more businesses in the hospitality sector to become accredited living wage employers.
