Cervical Cancer Prevention Week

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 24 to 30 January 2016 is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, which is aimed at raising awareness of the causes and symptoms of cervical cancer and the importance of cervical screening, which has continued to see a decline in uptake rates; understands that, in 2014-15, only 65.7% of women aged 25 to 29 had been screened in the last three and a half years and only 78.7% of women aged 55 to 59 had been screened in the last five years,  with the figures falling significantly over the last decade; further understands that many women who are invited for screening but do not attend are from disadvantaged groups; welcomes the #SmearForSmear campaign led by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust to encourage women to attend screening, and notes calls for members, clinicians and policymakers to support the campaign and the week to help the fight to eradicate cervical cancer.
