Solicitor Trainees to Receive at Least the Living Wage
The motion
That the Parliament notes that, from April 2016, solicitor traineeship contracts will only be registered by the Law Society of Scotland if payment is at or above the living wage; welcomes that this is the pay rate set by the Living Wage Foundation; believes that it is independently calculated with reference to the minimum income standards required for what should provide a basic, but adequate, standard of living; considers that it is vital to the wellbeing of trainee solicitors, and to other workers, that minimum pay rates reflect the living wage; understands that over 80% of solicitors, students and trainees surveyed by the law society supported moving the lowest salary to at least the living wage, and considers that increasing the minimum pay rates for trainees is a positive step by the legal profession and its professional body.
