Glasgow Urban Wireless Network
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes Glasgow City Council's recent announcement that it has become the first Scottish city to offer free Wi-Fi in the city centre’s streets and public places; notes that the Urban Wireless network is being delivered by British Telecom in partnership with the council and will provide 24-hour availability to users across the city for a minimum of eight years; understands that the new service will be provided in high footfall areas as well as transport hubs and community areas; notes that the announcement is part of Glasgow City Council’s Digital Glasgow Roadmap, which aims to place Glasgow as a world leading digital city by 2017 as part of the council’s drive to support economic and social regeneration, and considers that free access to online services such as health advice, event information, tourist information and job sites will benefit both visitors and the people of Scotland’s biggest city for years to come.
