Tribute to Sir Nicholas Winton, the British Schindler

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the recent award to Sir Nicholas Winton, a 105-year-old British citizen, of the Order of the White Lion, the highest state honour of the Czech Republic; notes that the award was presented to Sir Nicholas by the Czech President, Miloš Zeman, at a ceremony held in Prague Castle; further notes that the award was granted in honour of Sir Nicholas’s actions in helping 669 children, mostly Jews, escape from the Nazis in 1938-39 following the Nazi occupation of the Sudetenland and Czechoslovakia by arranging for them to be transported to the UK where they were placed with foster families; is aware that Sir Nicholas’s kindertransports earned him the name, the British Schindler; notes that Sir Nicholas paid tribute to the UK for allowing unaccompanied children to come here through kindertransports, one of the only countries to do so at the time, and believes that Sir Nicholas, through his humanity and modesty, is fully deserving of the Order of the White Lion and remains an example to people of all generations to follow.
