The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Naomi Mitchison on being named Young Woman Engineer of the Year by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET); recognises that Naomi, a senior hardware engineer at the defence firm, Selex-ES in Edinburgh, received the UK-wide award for her world-leading work on laser warning systems for military aircraft; understands that the award will lead to her playing an ambassadorial role for the profession, building on her past experience of championing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to school pupils and students through careers events, workshops and participation in events including the Edinburgh Science Festival and Scottish Robotics Games; understands that women represent just 6% of the UK’s engineering workforce; therefore hopes that Naomi’s achievements will encourage other young women to study STEM subjects and inspire them to become engineers, scientists and technical leaders; shares Naomi’s determination and commitment to highlighting the varied and exciting opportunities available in STEM sectors, and wishes her success with all her future endeavours.
