William McIlvanney: Living with Words

The motion

That the Parliament is aware that the premiere of the documentary, William McIlvanney: Living with Words, was shown on 23 February 2015 at the Glasgow Film Theatre as part of the Glasgow Film Festival; notes that this documentary was filmed and directed by Maurice O’Brien and produced by Gill Parry and was a CONNECTfilm production for BBC Scotland; congratulates all those involved in making what it considers a fascinating and moving documentary profile of William McIlvanney and his literary influences and achievements; further considers that William McIlvanney, sometimes known as the “godfather of tartan noir” and one of Scotland’s favourite authors, whose major novel, Docherty, won the Whitbread Novel Prize in 1975 and was recently voted by Book Week Scotland as one of the top 10 Scottish novels ever written, is an inspiration to many Scots, including budding writers; considers that Docherty was an homage to the honour, fortitude and courage of Scotland’s working communities, and hopes that the documentary, which will also be shown on BBC 2 Scotland at 10pm on 27 February, will help increase optimism among budding Scottish authors and interest and awareness of Scottish writing and literature.
