27th Anniversary of the Piper Alpha Disaster
The motion
That the Parliament remembers the 167 men who tragically lost their lives 27 years ago on Piper Alpha; notes that Piper Alpha was a large fixed platform on the Piper oilfield, 193km north-east of Aberdeen, and that on 6 July 1988 a leaking gas valve started a fire that was then fed fresh fuel from ruptured pipework; understands that a massive fireball subsequently engulfed the platform, which led to machinery and steelwork being melted and making evacuation by safety vessels and helicopters impossible; notes that two rescue workers and 165 of the 226 people on board died, with 30 bodies never recovered; understands that the Pound for Piper Memorial Trust still accepts donations for the annual upkeep of the Piper Alpha memorial garden in Hazelhead Park in Aberdeen, and considers this work important for the memory of those who lost their lives and for the people who survived them.
