Centenary of James Keir Hardie Commemorated in Glasgow

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates the centenary of the death of James Keir Hardie on 26 September 1915, aged 59; acknowledges Hardie's fundamental importance to the development of the Labour movement, including the strikes of the new unionism in the 1880s and the founding of the Scottish Labour Party in 1888, the Independent Labour Party (ILP) in 1893 and the Labour Representation Committee in 1900; commends his role as a socialist in the UK Parliament, first as the ILP member for West Ham South and then for Merthyr Tydfil, and as the first leader of the Parliamentary Labour Party; celebrates the unveiling of a plaque at Maryhill Crematorium in the Western Necropolis on 29 September, exactly 100 years to the day since his funeral and cremation in the same place, and welcomes the fact that a bronze sculpture of Hardie created by Benno Schotz in 1939 is to be displayed in Glasgow's People's Palace in the Visions of the City exhibition until the end of November 2015.
