Wigtown Book Festival 2012

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the organisers of the 2012 Wigtown Book Festival, which was launched on 28 September; understands that it has grown since the first event in 1999 to become a 10-day festival that has attracted notable figures such as Alexander McCall Smith, Douglas Hurd, Jan Morris, Richard Holloway and John Simpson; notes that, alongside the traditional literary events, it now encompasses the visual arts, food and drink and music and dance and that over 175 events take place; understands that the festival is acknowledged as one of the country’s most prestigious literary events; commends the work of everyone involved with both the festival and Wigtown, and understands that Wigtown is recognised as Scotland’s national book town, which was a designation that was highlighted when it was awarded the title of Scotland’s most creative small town at the inaugural Creative Scotland Awards in January 2012.
