The motion

That the Parliament notes that the second National Food Collection will be held on 5 and 6 July 2013, in conjunction with Tesco, the Trussell Trust and FareShare; understands that there will be a collection in all Tesco stores across the UK; commends what it considers the success of the first collection, which was due to the kind generosity of Tesco customers, the hard work of staff in all stores and the 30% top-up donation that resulted in 2.4 million meals being provided for those in need, and which it understands was the biggest ever national food collection; notes the support that the partnership received from MSPs during the weekend of the last collection, which it understands was greatly appreciated; recognises, however, that food poverty remains a serious issue; understands that The Trussell Trust has said that the number of people turning to its foodbanks has almost tripled over the last 12 months and that FareShare is now redistributing food to more people than ever before, benefiting around 43,000 people every day through 910 charities based across the country, and welcomes the expansion of the second National Food Collection to all Tesco stores, including its smaller Express stores, in order for the partnership to provide further support for those in need.
