Cervical Screening Awareness Week 2015

The motion

That the Parliament notes that Cervical Screening Awareness Week 2015, which aims to highlight the importance of cervical screening and how attending a screening appointment can help to prevent cervical cancer, is taking place from 15 to 21 June 2015 and is led by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust; understands that the UK has a cervical screening programme that saves 5,000 lives a year, however nearly three women still die every day; is concerned that over 22% of women still do not attend their cervical screening; advocates that, with eight women diagnosed with cervical cancer every day, raising public awareness of cervical screening is a priority; further understands that almost two thirds of women aged 50 to 64 do not know that the human papilloma virus (HPV) causes cervical cancer and that women in this age group are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage cervical cancer than other eligible age groups; applauds what it considers to be the excellent work of Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust in supporting women and their families, and hopes that clinicians and policymakers will join the fight to eradicate cervical cancer.
