World Osteoporosis Day
The motion
That the Parliament notes that World Osteoporosis Day takes place every year on 20 October and understands that the day will be marked by the National Osteoporosis Society in Scotland and campaigners in over 90 countries worldwide; notes that osteoporosis can cause bones to become fragile and lead to fragility fractures, commonly in the hips, wrist and spine; believes that osteoporosis and resulting fragility fractures can impact significantly on the lives of individuals, their families and carers and can present significant costs to health and social care services; considers that the report, Life with Osteoporosis: the untold story, which was commissioned by the National Osteoporosis Society, represents landmark research into the lives of people affected by osteoporosis; further notes the finding in the report that 42% of people surveyed who had experienced fractures are in long-term pain, which they do not think will ever go away; understands that every year hip fractures alone account for over 7,000 unplanned hospital admissions in Scotland, resulting in a cost of £206 million, and believes that greater awareness of osteoporosis can help prevent fragility fractures and improve understanding of the condition.
