World AIDS Day 2015

The motion

That the Parliament note that World AIDS Day is being marked on 1 December 2015; recognises that the day has been established to reflect and remember people who have died and to reaffirm the commitment to ending HIV transmissions; understands that there are 4,995 people in Scotland living with HIV and that, with access to treatment and support, most will live long and healthy lives; believes however that, despite progress in response to the condition, there are still people in Scotland who die from AIDS-related illnesses; understands that an estimated 1,600 people with HIV remain unaware of their status and that addressing stigma associated with the virus plays a significant role in ensuring that more people get tested; believes that new studies have shown that pre-exposure prophylaxis offers part of the solution to curb transmission, and commends what it sees as the work of HIV Scotland in improving the involvement of people living with, or affected by, HIV to develop policy and in raising awareness among decision-makers.
