Give Workers a Fair Kick at the Ball
The motion
That the Parliament commends the Scottish Fair Trade Forum (SFTF) for petitioning FIFA to elect a president who is committed to delivering a fairer deal for those who make footballs; notes that the SFTF is urging candidates for the FIFA presidency to show their commitment by pledging to allow FIFA-approved footballs to carry Fairtrade certification; understands that Fairtrade footballs are made in the same factories and stitching centres as many global sports brands, and are made to meet FIFA’s standards; further understands that workers making Fairtrade footballs benefit from a fair wage, decent working conditions and the Fairtrade Premium, which supports development projects for workers and their communities; recognises the difference that this could make for workers, their families and communities, and urges parliamentarians to sign the SFTF’s petition.
